INDIANAPOLIS — A section of Interstate 70 closed for the last month is reopening a few days early.

The Indiana Department of Transportation utilized the COVID-19 restrictions to accelerate major construction projects around the city of Indianapolis. Among them was construction on eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 from Ronald Reagan Parkway to the South Split. The lanes closed on May 22 with a targeted opening date of June 28.

On Tuesday, INDOT posted on it's Facebook page that the eastbound lanes are reopening tonight.

In the post, INDOT said the grooves in the road surface will help make for a smoother ride.

Work on the westbound lanes of I-70 from the South Split to Ronald Reagan Parkway is set to begin June 26 and run through July 30.
