KOKOMO—Bob Sargent wore many hats during his long career in law enforcement and politics in Kokomo.
He spent 22-years with the Kokomo Police Department, rising to the rank of captain.
He was elected to a pair of terms as Howard County Sheriff, from 1974 to 81.
Between 1988 to 96, Sargent was Mayor of Kokomo.
In 1995, he was named a "Sagamore of the Wabash".
Upon learning of Sargent's death at the age of 92, current Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight called his predecessor a "mentor and friend."
"His impact on Kokomo will live on for generations to come through his work with dozens of organizations. One of his biggest accomplishments was the ability to bring people together, regardless of politics. I will miss Mayor Sargent and my thoughts go out to his family and friends." said Goodnight.
Earlier this year, the Kokomo Police Department posted a tribute to Sargent on its Facebook page. He was cited for starting the Mayor's Drug Abuse Council and the Turnaround program, which recognizes at-risk students who improve their grades.
A facility for homeless people currently under construction in Kokomo will be named for Sargent.
