INDIANAPOLIS — A 22-year-old Greenwood woman is charged in the July hit-and-run death of a young Indianapolis man on the city's south side.
23-year-old Jared Barker was dead on the front lawn of a house in the 7300 block of South Sherman Drive early in the morning on July 17. An autopsy showed he died of blunt force trauma to the head.
According the a probable cause affidavit from the Marion County Prosecutor, investigators determined Barker had been struck while walking along Sherman around 3 a.m. Police found many pieces of a car at the scene, including a portion of a bumper that had a vehicle identification number in it.
With that information, detectives traced the 2020 Kia Soul to Johnson. She initially declined to make a statement to police.
Detectives strengthened their case when cell phone records put Johnson's car in the area where Barker was hit around 3 a.m. on July 17.
Johnson was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death or catastrophic injury. She has an initial court hearing on August 11.
