GREENWOOD — A four-story 122-unit senior living apartment complex will be coming soon. The project already has some people upset.

People who live near State Road 135 and County Line Road in Greenwood, say traffic already gets backed up. Especially during rush hour.

And building the apartment complex will only exacerbate the problem.

"122 units right here coming out of our homes every single day is going to bother us," said Kathy Rivas. "With traffic, sewage, just privacy alone looking into our neighborhood."

John Spinnato says traffic will only get worse. "As bad as it is on County line, it's going to get worse when there's going to be people living there. There's going to be traffic but also people visiting them."

Kristin Smith says this neighborhood is usually peaceful. "Our kids come right out the door get right on the bus. It's a very nice neighborhood and that's what we want to keep it as, a neighborhood not a neighborhood with a four-story building right there. It's literally going to be a thorn in the side."

The City planning director says they modified some of the variances in response to the neighbors concerns.

They don't think they'll see an increase in traffic as much as neighbors suspect — considering it's a senior living complex. Although, they do recognize there will be a bump.

The mayor adds that this project will benefit senior citizens who wish to live independently, while maintaining access to health care and other community services. City staff are currently working with the developer to best address resident feedback.

American Senior Communities, who says the building height is less than what's allowed, it will generate less traffic than what it's commercially zoned for. They also plan to improve the existing drainage.

The Mayor also added that Greenwood is growing, and needs to have high-quality residential opportunities for all citizens.

"As part of the public process to receive necessary planning and zoning approvals," The Mayor said. "Residents in the area offered productive input, and city staff are currently working with the developer to best address that feedback."

The builder has yet to file the official site plans with the city. Once the planning commision has them, they'll have more details to consider.
