INDIANAPOLIS—Guns were found at two large Indianapolis high schools, Tuesday.

At both Ben Davis High School on the west side, and North Central High School on the north side, guns were found in student backpacks.

According to Washington Township Community Relations Coordinator Ellen Rogers, "This afternoon at North Central High School, an administrator addressed a student who was not in the student's assigned location. After conversation and investigation, it was determined that a search of the student was warranted. North Central administrators searched the student and a handgun was discovered in the student's backpack. North Central school resource officers and IMPD were immediately notified. The student and the weapon were taken into custody without incident."

A similar situation took place at Ben Davis. Superintendent Dr. Jeff Butts sent this message to parents. "A Ben Davis High School student was arrested Tuesday afternoon when school administrators responded to reports of possible smoking in one of the school's bathrooms. The student was apprehended on school property by law enforcement officers, who later found a gun in his backpack. We immediately contacted IMPD and they assisted our school resource officers in the investigation." Investigators say the gun was not loaded.

Dr. Butts went on to say, "I appreciate the administrators at Ben Davis High School and our school resource officers immediately implementing our school safety plan. I encourage you to speak with your student about school safety and reiterate the importance of reporting any suspicious activity to a staff member or school resource officer. The See Something, Say Something initiative is our greatest asset in school safety.
