CARMEL, Ind. -- The interim superintendent of Carmel Clay Schools has recommended rebuilding two elementary schools.

According to the district, total enrollment at Carmel Clay's eleven elementary schools is down 3 percent from what it was six years ago.

At Monday night's board meeting, the interim superintendent made a recommendation to rebuild a new Carmel Clay Elementary School on its current site, and rebuild Orchard Park Elementary on a different location on Clay Center Road.

The district has previously said it would cost $43 million to renovate both buildings.

"Orchard Park Elementary is a school, it is not just a building. and that school was developed within that community based on the faculty, the administration, the students and the community support," said Laura Moore, a parent near Orchard Park. "You can't take that and relocate that."

According to the board, the new Orchard Park location property is larger and roughly 1,300 students would have a shorter bus ride.
