CARMEL, Ind. – As you grow older, it can become more challenging to stay mentally sharp.
A group of seniors at the Barrington of Carmel got together to start doing a hobby they love.
Woodworking is a hobby that seniors love but when they came to the Barrington of Carmel, they had to leave it behind.
"Many of us that had done woodworking in the past, didn't have any place to put it when we moved so we gave it away,” resident Tom Wright said.
About a year ago, a group of residents went to management and asked for a woodshop so they could get back to the hobby that they loved.
For residents like Woody Hurst, it gives them something to do.
“[Woodworking] gets me out of my recliner chair, which is really tempting to stay in,” Hurst said.
Having the woodshop at the retirement community brings many benefits to the residents that go beyond Christmas ordainments and other things they make.
These activities for residents promote intellectual stimulation, which is an important component at Barrington of Carmel.
In order to do that, Jamie Short of Barrington of Carmel says residents need physical, intellectual, spiritual, and social growth.
“It’s proven that adults can grow muscle and develop muscles later in life. They are able to keep their brain sharp by doing brain activities, Short said.
Residents also repair furniture for others at the retirement community.
