FISHERS, Ind. -- A local non-profit aims to help Hoosiers starting over due to a tragedy or misfortune and veterans in need of a helping hand with your unwanted furniture.
Colin Lennon is the Executive Director of Mustard Seed.
“The biblical context of the mustard seed is from something small, something great can happen,” said Lennon. “A small measure of faith can really blossom.”
That’s the concept of his non-profit, which is similar to a clothing pantry or food bank, except it provides furniture.
“We’re the only furniture bank in the area,” said Lennon.
The Mustard Seed of Central Indiana has two warehouses in Fishers, stocked with furniture donated from the public, hotels, nursing homes, universities and more.
Social services agencies refer clients who then go pick out the furniture they need to get themselves started. Many of their clients are coming out of situations like homelessness, domestic violence or have been displaced due to tragedy or a natural disaster.
“Moving into a new place, especially if you’re coming out of homelessness, you don’t have any furniture. You don’t have a bed, a dining room table or a couch and chair in the living room,” said Lennon.
The Mustard Seed collects gently used furniture, excluding major appliances or large TVs.
“The rule of thumb is, if you would give it to your grandma, we’ll take it,” said Lennon. “What we try to do is take somebody’s small little measure of hope and turn it into an abundance of joy.”
