FISHERS, Ind. -- For people in Fishers who will miss the annual Fishers Freedom Festival, the city announced a new summer event for 2018.

Fishers announced the Spark!Fishers celebration, a community-led weekend celebration of the city, set to take place in June 2018.

The weekend promises to have the following events in the Nickel Plate District:

  • National concert at the newly renovated Nickel Plate District AMP
  • Family-friendly 5K walk/run
  • Street Fair, filled with everything from food to entertainment
  • A community parade, unlike anything Fishers’ residents have seen before
  • A community fireworks show to conclude the celebration

“When the City decided to spearhead a summer event in the Nickel Plate District, we wanted to create something community-led, first and foremost,” Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness said in a release. “Spark!Fishers pays homage to the rich history of our community while celebrating how it has and will continue to ignite our future.”

The Fishers Freedom Festival ended its run in August 2017 after 29 years. The Fishers City Council and Fadness discontinued all grant money and in-kind services to the festival.

The Fishers Freedom Festival began in 1989, and grew into a picnic, parade and weekend event. In 1998, the festival became a non-profit, meaning it could accept tax-deductible donations.

The exact date for Spark!Fishers weekend has not been announced.
