WESTFIELD, Ind. - Every school in Westfield will have new safety measures in place before the start of the next school year that requires background checks for every person who enters the school.

Westfield Washington Schools says the new background check system, called SafeVisitor, will be used to perform background checks on every visitor that goes into a school, including family members of students.

On its website, the district says lunch guests, people attending classroom parties, classroom volunteers, room parents and field trip chaperones will all need to use SafeVisitor to complete their background check.

"No specific incident led to the implementation. We wanted to increase our layers of safety and security and a visitor management system is something that we have been looking to implement for some time and is something that is recommended by safety experts," said Christopher Baldwin, Director of Human Resources with Westfield Washington Schools.

Baldwin says several central Indiana school districts use the same system, including Zionsville, Noblesville and Hamilton Southeastern Schools.

Each SafeVisitor background check will cost $12.95 and will be good for three years. The process takes three to six business days, so you need to turn in your background check well before the school function you would like to attend.

SafeVisitor will be in place by the first day of school on August 7th.
