FISHERS, Ind. -- When an emergency strikes, firefighters have to be out the door in a matter of seconds, but crews at one of Fishers' busiest stations say drivers blocking the street in front of their fire station is causing a delay in their response time.

Fishers Fire Department Station 92 is located on 116th Street near Brookschool Road, one of the city's busiest intersections. Because of its location, there are several signs and white painted lines notifying drivers not to stop in front of the station's driveway.

But those signs don't seem to be making a difference.

"It actually happens on a regular basis. Fortunately, the light changes quick. Even though there's a delay, it's not a crazy long delay," said Fishers Fire Dept. Captain John Mehling.

Firefighters at Station 92 responded to 653 runs in 2017. It's one of the busiest fire stations in the area, and crews say when the tone sounds they're out the door in a minute and a half or less - because every second counts.

"We don't have additional time to wait for a vehicle that's parked in front of the apron so we can respond," said Captain Mehling.

Captain Mehling says they're reaching out to drivers who travel the area so they'll understand why those lines and signs are there, and the difference they can make.

"We just want to make people aware so when they are traveling through the area - particularly the ones who travel through here a lot - you can help us by stopping at a line," said Captain Mehling. "When you're needing those emergency resources to show up, you need us there as quick as we can get."
