NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- Trees are being cleared for a 12-foot wide planned trail in Noblesville, connecting Hazel Dell Road East to Willowview Road, as the second phase of the Midland Trace Trail.

According to a news release from the City of Noblesville, crews will only remove trees from city-owned or public right-of-way land.

“Tree clearing is the first step in the construction process so the land can be prepped for site work. We’re excited to begin phase II a year ahead of schedule and continue the momentum of the Midland Trace Trail,” Mayor John Ditslear said.

The first portion of the Midland Trace Trail was constructed in 2017, connecting Westfield’s portion of the trail at Gray Road to Hazel Dell Road. The city said initial tree clearing work will be completed before mid-March, followed by construction of the trail as weather permits.

City planners hope to have the second phase of the trail open by mid-August of 2018. An independent arborist has been hired to review the clearing plans as well as the trail site to inventory trees.

According to the city’s news release, tree clearings must be completed during this time of the year before construction of the trail is ready to proceed because of federal regulations for bat habitats.

The city is financing 20 percent of the construction of phase II and the land acquired. The remaining funding is coming from a federal aid grant obtained by the Noblesville Engineering Department.
