GREENFIELD, Ind. -- Two 18-year-old men were arrested Tuesday morning after they stole a rifle out of a Greenfield police officer's vehicle, police say.

The rifle was stolen from the vehicle of an officer with the Greenfield Police Department in the overnight hours of June 11. The vehicle was parked at the officer's house at the time of the theft. The rifle was a department-issued Colt patrol rifle with a 30-round magazine.

Tuesday morning, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department found two suspects at an abandoned property near the 3200 block of Eastbrooke Court in Indianapolis. The call initially came in as an animal welfare check, as the suspects had left a dog in a vehicle. The rifle was recovered from the two suspects.

According to a police report, the two suspects are Antoine Christie and Brendan William Bodie.

Christie was preliminarily charged with possession of a handgun without a license. Bodie was preliminarily charged with possession of a handgun without a license and theft of a firearm.

Investigators with Greenfield Police are trying to find out how the suspects took the rifle out of the gun rack. Either the rifle was stored improperly, or the magnetic mechanism that holds the rack in place malfunctioned, Greenfield Chief Jeff Rasche said.

Rasche said there doesn't appear to be forced entry into the vehicle, indicating the officer had left it unlocked. That goes against department protocol, Rasche said.
