Guidance counselor accused of stealing prescriptions from clinic at Hancock County school

HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. -- A guidance counselor at a Hancock County high school is accused of stealing prescription drugs from a locked cabinet in the school's clinic. 

The Community School Corporation of Southern Hancock County issued a release Monday saying Michelle Long, a guidance counselor at New Palestine High School, has been "removed from duty" while the investigation continues. 

The release says school administrators were recently made aware of prescription medication being stolen from a locked cabinet in the school's clinic and were working with the New Palestine Police Department to investigate the thefts. 

The district says they have increased security and surveillance measures at all school clinics following the incident. 

"The district will continue to fully cooperate with law enforcement throughout this
investigation," the release said.

"In recent days, Community School Corporation of Southern Hancock County administrators became aware of an incident involving the theft of prescription medicine from a locked cabinet in the New Palestine High School clinic.

CSCSHC immediately turned the investigation into this theft over to the New Palestine Police Department. During the course of the investigation, law enforcement officials informed the school district that charges would be filed against New Palestine High School guidance counselor Michelle Long in connection with the theft.

Because the safety and health of all students is our number one priority, the district took immediate action by removing Long from duty."

CSCSHC has also increased security and surveillance measures in our school clinics. The district will continue to fully cooperate with law enforcement throughout this investigation. The district is not at liberty to discuss any additional details regarding this incident.
