HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. -- School districts in Hancock County are taking a major step towards making their students safer with a new tool that every teacher has right on their phone.
Teachers and staff members at schools across Hancock County are now equipped with an app called the “Rave Panic Button.”
When a teacher presses the button on their phone, the response goes out to all staff members in Hancock County schools and all first responders across the county.
“The average active shooter event doesn’t take very long,” said Derek Shelton, Director of Operations at Mt. Vernon Community Schools. “Usually the understanding is, the situation comes to an end quickly, so the sooner you can get first responders there – the end is short.”
When the button is pushed, first responders get key information showing the name of the staff member who pushed it, their location and the building plan.
“One of the best things about the button is that every law enforcement officer in our county is immediately notified,” said Wes Anderson, Director of School and Community Relations at Southern Hancock Schools. “Regardless of what we know about the situation, everybody is coming. It’s a great tool for us.”
The Rave Panic App will only be available to teachers, staff members and administrators and can only be used on school grounds.
