HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind. --  A Hendricks County homeowner was hailed as hero Monday after alerting her neighbors to a fast-moving fire that damaged four homes.

The fire broke out just after 6:20 a.m. in the Williamsburg Villages subdivision on James Blair Drive, according to Brownsburg Fire Territory Captain Ryan Miller.

Melba Montgomery was on her way to work when she saw black smoke.

“I didn’t hear any sirens, so I thought something was up,” said Montgomery.  “I started to continue to go to work, but something told me not to. So, I went around the corner and I came on this street and the garage was on fire.”

Montgomery called 911 and told them the address of the fire, and while she was on the phone with the dispatcher she started knocking on the door of the home that was going up in flames.

“I began to knock on the door and rang the doorbell and the little girl came to the door, and I was like ‘Hi is your dad home? Your guys’ house is on fire,’” said Montgomery. “They came out and got their dogs, and once they came out the garage began to go up in flames even more.  It seemed like to me I got here on time or something.”

Thankfully no one was injured in the fire.

“I’m just happy everybody’s alive,” said Montgomery.  “It’s my neighborhood too.”

Numerous agencies responded to the fire, which spread quickly to nearby homes, including Wayne Township, Pike Township, Danville and Indianapolis.

The neighborhood is located at 56th and Raceway in Hendricks County.

Members of the community are working together to donate gift cards to the impacted families.
