AVON, Ind. -- Those living in Hendricks County can get in the holiday spirit at the first-of-its-kind Avon ice rink.

The Avon rink boasts a different type of skating as it is “iceless.”

The 1,800 square-foot rink is made with a synthetic material that is activated with a non-toxic chemical. It is not weather dependent, and does not need to be refrigerated.

“You can use any types of skates, so if you have skates at home, you can bring yours, we also have rentals for the public to use as well. The 'iceless' sheet will not ruin your skates,” said Cassi Still, owner of Premier Inflatables.

This is the first year Washington Township Park and Premier Inflatables has partnered to install the ice rink. It took just one day to put the ice rink in the park, and it is ready to use year-round.

“The reason we decided on an 'iceless' rink because we will be able to use it longer,” says Lora Lacey, the park director for Washington Township Park. “Living in Indiana, we don’t know what kind of weather we are going to get. So to have this rink here, it is more cost effective, and it will be around longer for people to enjoy.”

The rink opened to the public Dec. 1, and will stay open through early 2018.

It is $10 per skater, which includes skate rental. Group discounts are available as well.
