NEW CASTLE, Ind. -- Famous Indiana artist Robert Indiana, best known for his LOVE sculpture series, has died. He was 89.
His lawyer, James W. Brannan, told the New York Times that Indiana died from Saturday from respiratory failure at his home off the coast of Maine.
Indiana, whose original name was Robert Clark, was born in New Castle in 1928. According to his biography, Indiana played a central role in the development of assemblage art, hard-edge painting and Pop art.

Indiana’s iconic LOVE sculpture was returned to the Pulliam Family Great Hall at the Indianapolis Museum of Art last March after undergoing critical conservation treatment.

Completed in 1970, the iconic sculpture was one of the first created from Cor-Ten steel and is accepted as the original version of Indiana’s LOVE sculptures.
The piece has been on display at the museum since it was acquired in 1975.
