Suspect arrested, 10-year-old victim identified in fatal Kokomo hit-and-run

KOKOMO, Ind. -- A 10-year-old girl that was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Kokomo Thursday afternoon has died.

Officers with the Kokomo Police Department were called to the 800 block of East Alto Road just before 4:30 p.m. for a report of a child that was hit by a vehicle while she was walking. Witnesses told police that they saw a silver or light-colored sedan fleeing the scene. 

Police have identified the girl as Renay Jenkins of Kokomo. 

Jenkins was airlifted to Riley Hospital for Children where she later died. The Marion County Coroner's Office says the preliminary cause of death is blunt force trauma.

Officers later located the suspect and vehicle in the 200 block of East Alto Road. The driver was identified as Josh Cochran, 22. He was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. 

Police say toxicology results are pending to determine whether drugs or alcohol were a contributing factor in the crash. 

The accident remains under investigation by the Kokomo Police Department. Anyone with information regarding the case should contact Sgt. Neil Marcus at 765-456-7333.
