KOKOMO, Ind. — The city of Kokomo is adding an ice skating rink to Kokomo Municipal stadium in time for the holidays.

The Ice skating rink will be known as The Frozen Sandlot, which will operate from Dec. 5-Jan. 13, 2019.

According to city officials, the 60- by 90-foot rink will feature real ice, unlike temporary rinks which utilize ice-like materials, and the rink will be placed in an area where spectators and non-skaters can watch.

They are partnering with the non-profit Bridges Outreach. Their staff with operate the rink and will keep the proceeds from tickets sales and some of the concessions.

Admission is $10 for skaters which includes skate rental, and $2 for non-skaters.

Coupons will be available for a $5 discount at local businesses as well as online at thefrozensandlot.com. A schedule of skate time and businesses with the discount coupons will also be available on that website.

“This allows us to utilize Municipal Stadium in the off-season, adding an amenity like ice skating makes the most of the stadium year round,” Mayor Greg Goodnight said.

Bridges Outreach will also use the opportunity to integrate their job training program at the rink and workers from that program will be employed at the rink.

“We talked to the city about some kind of job training program in the past, and when the mayor brought this opportunity to use, we saw it as a real positive in addition to being something great for the community," Casey Cline of Bridges Outreach said.

"Ice skating is a fun, family activity, It’s a perfect mix of adding physical activity with something that’s really fun to do," Goodnight said.
