INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Animal Care Services is launching a new campaign to assist with overcrowding at the shelter and help keep animals in their forever homes.

The "No Place Like Home" campaign offers pet owners resources and options to help with issues that may lead to animals being surrendered to the shelter.

The new campaign comes as the shelter is well past capacity.

In the past week, 300 animals were brought in to the shelter and just under 80 were adopted out. The overcrowding is at its peak right now with dogs being kept in crates in the hallways due to lack of space.

On Saturday, many families stopped by the shelter after learning there was a need to free up space.

China Garcia and her family drove from Seymour to IACS to adopt two cats. Garcia said there are shelters that are closer to home, but she felt it would make a bigger difference to take home pets from IACS.

"We have animal controls and shelters near where we live but we felt this was the better option since they are so overcrowded," Garcia said.

The family took home a kitten and an adult cat. They also made a donation.

Raymond Samples also came by after learning of the overcrowding.

"We saw that they were overcrowded with all the dogs here, and we thought there's no better time to come and adopt. Help relieve some of the stress in here and get some animals to good homes," Samples said.

Indianapolis Animal Care Services staff hope that the combination of offering free adoptions along with their new "No Place Like Home" campaign will help create more space for animals who truly need to be at the shelter.
