INDIANAPOLIS — A new program at Indianapolis Animal Care Services is aimed at getting more animals out of the cages and into homes — even if just for a few days.

IACS announced the 'Cuddle Before You Commit' program on Tuesday. The program allows the public to foster a dog or cat for two weeks before finalizing an adoption.

If the animal isn't returned by day 15, or a return appointment hasn't been made, the adoption application will be processed, and the adoption will be finalized.

"Sometimes it's hard to know how an animal will respond in a new home after spending weeks in the stressful environment of the shelter," Katie Trennepohl, Deputy Director of IACS, said. "During this two-week period, the Cuddle Foster will be able to see if the animal they've chosen is a good fit for their home and family."

Even if the adoption doesn't work out, Cuddle Fosters are encouraged to take pictures and share their pet's story on social media.

Cuddle Fosters can also register to only foster and not adopt.
