INDIANAPOLIS — Two yard signs honoring front-line heroes are a point of pride for Damon and Tina Turnmire.

Damon has worked with children with special needs at Damar Services for 16 years, while Tina has worked for more than a decade at Homeview Health in Franklin.

"I love working with the kids. I love it. It is one of the most rewarding jobs ever," Damon said.

The Turnmires have been married for eight years. Their passion for serving others is highlighted with two yard signs, one proclaiming, "A Hero Lives Here" and the other, "We Love Our Hero."

"I was proud. My mom gave it to me," Tina said. "She brought it for all her daughters, sisters that are working. Some in health care or working at Meijer."

However, their homeowners association sent them a letter asking them to remove the signs from public view for violating their neighborhood's covenants.

"I was enraged at this present moment and time," Damon said. "We should be able to appreciate and acknowledge what we do."

In the letter, the HOA gave the couple time to remove the signs before it takes action.

"I'm understanding that, while we have a pandemic, my stand until this pandemic is over I think it should be represented that we are going to work every day and we are doing what needs to be done to look out for America," Tina said.

RTV6 reached out to Omni Property Management Services. We are told only the board of directors can make an exemption. Nobody from the board has replied to a request for comment.

The Turnmires have until Thursday to remove the signs or they could face legal action.

RTV6 has also heard from teachers who live in HOA neighborhoods and have reported being warned to remove their appreciation signs, as well.
