INDIANAPOLIS -- More than a dozen people were treated for overdoses in downtown Indianapolis Saturday afternoon on what police believe was some form of synthetic drug also known as "Spice."
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers say most of the overdose victims were in the area of Market and East streets, near the Wheeler Mission.
EMS officials say they treated 14 patients for overdose symptoms and seven of those patients had to be taken to the hospital. None of the overdoses have been fatal.
Police say they were unable to use Narcan on any of the victims because "Spice" is not an opiate and Narcan has been ineffective in previous attempts at reversing the effects of the drugs.

The overdoses happened in the same area that was rocked with more than two dozen overdoses in a 24 hour periodback in February.
Of those victims, 17 were registered as living at the Wheeler Mission.
Two men were later charged in connection with the drugs from those overdoses and police confiscated an unknown amount of the drug known as "flakka" - a synthetic drug akin to bath salts.
Police say it appears the overdoses were caused by the victims taking some type of "synthetic narcotic" but they have not been able to determine exactly what that drug was.

Because of a large number of overdoses, extra narcotic officers were brought in to patrol the area and police had an ambulance on standby to be ready to treat any new victims that came forward.
The incidents all remain under investigation by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Narcotics Division.
