INDIANAPOLIS -- We're seeing a lot of traffic due to the I-65 closure, but what do you do if you're in an emergency and you're stuck in gridlock?
If you need a faster route to the hospital, LifeLine at IU Health Manager Alex Rosa said they have measures in place that can help.
"If you're not familiar with the city and you don't know the back routes, if you call IU Health’s main number the operators have a list of routes you can take from where you're coming from,” Rosa said. “They'll be happy to asset you to getting around the traffic."
If it is a serious situation, Rosa said don't navigate through the gridlock, let the paramedics come to you.
"They can provide life-saving treatments at your residence and continue that care to the emergency room," Rosa said.
LifeLine is expected to make more than 11,500 transports this year.
If you see an ambulance in your rear-view mirror, pull to the side and stop. If you can’t make it through the light in time, don’t block the intersection, ALS Paramedic Kevin King said.
"If an emergency happens and we need to get through the intersection, we don't want to put individuals in a state where they have to choose or maybe panic and make the wrong decision," King said.
Lifeline has a communication center finding the best routes especially in volumes of high traffic.

A) Coming to downtown using I-70WB: Take I-70 WB to downtown as always, and take ramp for I-65NB and immediately exit at Meridian Street. ONLY Ramp open after taking ramp from I-70WB to I-65NB
1: For Methodist: Come down ramp and cross over Delaware to traffic light at Meridian, second traffic light, and turn right (north)on Meridian to 16th St. At 16th St., turn left (west) continue to Senate Blvd (4th traffic light) and turn right (north) to entrance at Methodist Hospital.
2: For Goodman Hall Neuroscience Bldg: Come down ramp and cross over Delaware to traffic light at Meridian, second traffic light, and turn right (north)on Meridian to 16th St. At 16th St., turn left (west)continue to Senate AVE (3rd traffic light) and turn left (south)to 15th St. and turn right onto 15th St and turn right at entrance of Goodman Hall.
3: Main Pathology Lab, Fairbanks Hall, Gateway, Sleep Disorder Center: Come down ramp and cross over Delaware to traffic light at Meridian, second traffic light, turn left then typical local surface street directions from there.
- ALTERNATE and backup: I-70 WB and exit at Keystone / Rural. Bottom of ramp, at light, turn left (south) and take to Michigan St. the turn right (west) onto Michigan St. for directions below. NOTE: Michigan street is MOST direct route to downtown areas.
1: For Methodist: At Senate Ave., Turn right (north) to 16th Street. At 16th
Street, turn left (west) to Senate Blvd and turn right (north) to entrance at

7: Sleep Disorder Center: Take Michigan St to Senate Ave, turn right (north) on Senate Ave., from Michigan to building on left.
8: Gateway: Take Michigan St to Illinois Street, turn right (north) on Illinois St. to parking lots in area.
B) Coming to downtown from the South using I-65 from the South: Take 65 NB to downtown as always, but exit (only option) at Meridian Street.

C) Coming I-65SB from Northwest Indiana. I-65SB will be closed at mile marker 123 for approximately the same time frame July 1 to about August 5th. This will affect ALL persons planning to use I-65SB to downtown locations so access to I-65SB at 21st MAY NOT be available. Below directions are based on their being directed to I-465SB at mile marker 123.
1) For Riley: Take I-465SB to 10th street exit (exit 14) at top of ramp, turn left (east) onto 10th street. Take 10th street to Riley Hospital Drive (4 traffic lights after crossing over White River) turn right, onto Riley Hospital Drive and use Simon Family Tower Garage on left. First garage on the left, just before the car port /main entrance at Riley Hospital.
2) For UH: Take I-465SB to 10th street exit (exit 14) at top of ramp, turn left (east) onto 10th street. Take 10th street to Indiana Ave (6th traffic light after crossing over White River) and turn right. At University Blvd (1st traffic light) turn right. Take University Blvd to 2nd traffic light – hospital entrance is on the right at that intersection.
3) For IUSCC: Take I-465SB to 10th street exit (exit 14) at top of ramp, turn left (east) onto 10th street. Take 10th street to Indiana Ave (6th traffic light after crossing over White River) and turn right. At University Blvd (1st traffic light) turn right. Take University Blvd to 3rd traffic light, turn right onto Michigan street and take to IUSCC entrance on right.
