INDIANAPOLIS -- There were six people killed in Indianapolis over a four-day period that included Memorial Day weekend, and three of those victims were killed at or near their place of employment.

The latest murder happened Tuesday morning when an employee at a Shell gas station near the intersection of 34th Street and Sherman Drive was shot and killed in the parking lot around 5 a.m.

On Saturday, an employee at McDonald's on West 16th Street near Tibbs Road was killed in the CVS parking lot next door while he was taking a break from work.

And on Sunday, an employee at Dollar General in the 5400 block of Emerson Way was killed during what police believe was a robbery.

IMPD Deputy Chief Chris Bailey says the bottom line is that it's easy for a criminal to get a gun - and they're quick to pull the trigger - even over minor arguments.

"We could put an officer in every single store in the city," said Bailey. "There are certain types of violence that unfortunately is going to be perpetrated because no matter how many cops you have, you cannot police someone's wickedness."

That's why customers have to protect themselves.

"Run, hide and if you have to - then fight," said Bailey.

Police are still looking for the suspects in many of these murders and they're hoping the public will come forward with information that will help them do so.

"Be a good witness. Take in all that you can see, all descriptions, even minor things that you think are unimportant could be that single piece that we need to solve a case," said Bailey.

If you have any information - no matter how small or unimportant you think it might be - contact IMPD or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
