INDIANAPOLIS -- The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana has a shortage of men looking to be mentors.
The shortage means boys are waiting, possibly for up to a year, for a match.
This has led Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana to begin a "100 Men in 50 Days" campaign.
Darcey Palmer-Shultz, the CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana, said of the more than 900 kids on the waiting list right now in Marion, Hamilton, and Johnson counties, about 70 percent are boys.
"Big Brothers Big Sisters has a lot of families and kids that reach out to us," she said. "But the reality is that demand has outpaced us."
The average wait time for a boy to be matched with a big brother mentor is about a year.
"It's extremely important because just think about it -- a kid that's ready to accept the help and there's nobody there to give it," said Ralph Redmond, a volunteer.
