DECATUR TOWNSHIP, Ind. -- A child is in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle on Indianapolis' southwest side Thursday afternoon.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to the scene near the intersection of Millhouse Road and Millhouse Court sometime before 4 p.m.

Police say the boy was struck by a vehicle and taken to Riley Hospital for Children in critical condition. The circumstances surrounding the crash have not been released.

Police say the driver of the car that hit the child stayed on the scene and is cooperating with their investigation. The driver will be taken to the hospital for a blood draw, which is standard procedure in any accident involving serious bodily injury or death, according to police.

At this time, drugs or alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the accident.

The accident remains under investigation by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
