INDIANAPOLIS -- Drivers are growing frustrated over the closure of I-65 and the traffic gridlock it's causing through downtown Indianapolis during rush hour.

It's only the second week of the I-65 shutdown and some drivers say even though they planned for it, it's been worse than they expected.

"What normally takes me 15 minutes is taking me 30," said one driver. "It's taking me 30 minutes to get home."

The detours off of the interstate are bringing city streets to a near stand-still during high traffic times and causing people to sit through several green lights before moving through an intersection.

"It sucks for people like me who are in college and pay for all their stuff and their car sucks and it's going to break down right in the middle of all of this traffic," said another driver.

Call 6 Investigates' Paris Lewbel found that one of the issues was that the traffic lights aren't synced up, as soon as one turns red, the next one will turn green.

The Department of Public Works says they are monitoring those signals but they believe adjustments to the timing at any of the affected intersections would probably have a marginal effect on traffic.

INDOT says they are monitoring traffic levels and will make adjustments on a case-by-case basis when needed.

"Due to this being a new week with increased traffic, INDOT is and will continue to monitor traffic patterns and make adjustments on a case-by-case basis if/when appropriate. Crews will also deploy message boards to select locations to encourage motorists to use routes that have been underutilized since the closure that was identified by INDOT's Traffic Management Center with the assistance of DPW and IMPD."
