INDIANAPOLIS -- The matriarch of the family behind Veal's Ice Tree is turning 99 years old, and her family wants to help make that birthday special.
Mabel Veal will turn 99 years old next month. Her family is asking for birthday cards to honor and acknowledge her hard work for the famous ice tree.
The Veal's have built an ice tree since 1961 on Indianapolis' southeast side. For years, the family has turned the tree's lights off around 10 p.m. They do not accept money or donations for the tree.

Mabel never worked on the tree, but she's paid the electric bills "with happiness," a Facebook post said. She retired 9 years ago at age 90, but is failing fast, the post reads.
