INDIANAPOLIS -- Hundreds of men, women and children carried signs and marched through downtown Indianapolis as part of "March for Life" on Monday in an effort to ban abortions in the state.

Members of Indiana Right to Life and leaders from the Catholic church organized this year's March for Life.

The walk and rally fell on the 45th anniversary of the landmark US Supreme Court Decision - Roe vs. Wade - which established women's constitutional right to have an abortion.

"Abortion is not just about the baby or the mother," said Evelyn Hoefer. "It questions the dignity of us as human beings. As Catholics, we believe that we are all created by God and that every human being has equal worth and equal value."

Pro-life advocates say about 8,000 abortions are performed each year in Indiana.

A bill to ban abortions in the state has been filed this session but has not been scheduled for a hearing.
