INDIANAPOLIS -- Thousands of Hoosiers have already applied to take advantage of a new Indiana law that allows them to access their sealed adoption records.
The law, passed during this year’s legislative session and later signed by Governor Eric Holcomb, allows nearly 37,000 adoption records from 1941 to 1994 to be unsealed.

Barbara Allen was one of nearly 5,000 people who has already filed to access those records so she can learn who her birth parents are.
“I think that was the hardest thing to go through life without knowing your heritage, who your mom is, who your dad is, who you look like, who you talk like – who you laugh like,” said Allen. “There has to be someone I’m like.”
While the new law allows the records to be opened, birth parents still have the option to request that they stay sealed and the state says some parents have already done so.
