INDIANAPOLIS -- Businesses on Indy's north side are hiring security guards to help protect them from crime.

The intersection of 38th and North Illinois Streets has become an area which is no stranger to criminal activity.

Ariana Lopez-Mercado works at Deering Cleaners and says she's concerned about the crime in the area.

"Sometimes you see people selling drugs in the parking lot. I mean it is very obvious," Lopez-Mercado said.

Rev. Dr. Charles Harrison, board president of the Indianapolis Ten Point Coalition, took to Twitter to speak out against concerns he has about the area:

Lopez-Mercado thinks that businesses need to do more and provide 24/7 security.

A spokesperson for the BP gas station in the area told RTV6 that security was hired for the gas station and McDonalds, but is not staffed 24/7.

People like Lopez-Mercado says it's helping, and she feels safe getting gas there now.

Other businesses in the area, including the CVS Pharmacy and Burger King have security, but would not share the hours they are staffed.
