INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis City-County Council is expected to approve more than $1 million that will be used to attract additional business and visitors to the Lafayette Square area known as the “International Marketplace.”
The area is considered a “Community Revitalization and Enhancement District,” meaning some of the state and local income taxes paid by employees who work there and retail taxes generated from businesses can be redirected toward development in the area.
Mary Clark has worked and lived in the Lafayette Square area most of her life.
She started the “International Marketplace Coalition” almost a decade ago after she started noticing more businesses closing and immigrants moving into the area.
“A different kind of organic growth was happening here,” said Clark. “We started noticing the immigrant community moving into spaces that were traditional retail spaces.”
Now, more than 80 ethnic restaurants call the Lafayette Square area home.
If approved, the funds will be used to create a new senior housing center and improve the IndyGo Bus shelters.
