INDIANAPOLIS -- As the heat index soars past 100 degrees for the third day in a row, an Indianapolis facility that works with people who have developmental disabilities is having issues with its air conditioning system.

The building that houses Noble is cooled by two air conditioning units but only one of them is working.

Julia Huffman, CEO and President of Noble, says she ordered the replacement back in April but it's still going to be a few weeks before things will be fixed.

"The current unit, as I understand it, is being nursed along sometimes adding Freon when it gets a little warm," said Huffman.

Huffman says the freon fills usually keep the building cool for a couple of weeks, but after an A/C repair company left the building, RTV6 cameras captured temperatures still up to 81 degrees.

The United Way is helping to pay for the nearly $200,000 unit, which Huffman says has to be custom built to fit the building.

Employees say this isn't a new problem, and the faulty air conditioner has been an ongoing issue.

"They knew it didn't work last year and we are into the next summer and they're putting a band aid on it when it should have been taken care of already," said the employee.

Huffman says in the meantime, they have small rooms where clients and staff can go to cool down.

"We have opened up the parts of the building where we have large rooms that are cooled on a different unit," said Huffman.

But employees say those areas are not a realistic solution and they're upset that the repairs have taken this long.

"The art room is cooled off, it's a small space," said the employee. "There are a hundred clients and everybody can't fit in there."

Huffman says clients can request to receive their services at a different facility in the meantime. The company also has a nurse on staff, but so far there have been no health issues as a result of the heat.

Since RTV6's Graham Hunter started asking questions, employees say Noble installed portable AC units to cool the space where clients are working and they've reached out to the company building their new A/C unit to expedite the service.

Meals on Wheels has also offered their space to Noble while they wait for their unit to be fixed.

It's still unclear how long it will be before the new unit arrives.
