INDIANAPOLIS — IndyGo will buy 13 new diesel buses to add to its fleet, while canceling an order for six electric buses.

The IndyGo board approved the purchase of the new buses, which will cost no more than $7.5 million.

IndyGo initially planned to put the BYD electric buses on Route 39, with the new Purple Route alignment in June. But because of frequent issues with the BYD buses, IndyGo needs them all on the Red Line.

The BYD buses have not met the 275-mile range as promised by BYD. Also, the company has yet to deliver the inductive charging setup, which was supposed to be in effect in September.

IndyGo also canceled an order of five BYD buses it first made in December.

“This cancelation would be permanent until a viable solution is presented and verified by BYD and IndyGo,” an IndyGo board memorandum states.
