INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett ended the 35-year moratorium on new streetlights in 2016. But first, the existing streetlights have to be upgraded.
Tina Graham planted roots in the Mars Hill neighborhood more than 50 years ago. Much about the neighborhood has remained the same, there is one thing she wants to change.
"We have street lights, but we don't have enough so that we feel comfortable," Graham said.
Graham is requesting new lights on her street and a couple others in the neighborhood.
"It's night time when most of the vandalism goes on, and burglaries and things like that," she said.
She and her neighbors recently paid for IPL to install a streetlight in their alley.
"It's scary and we feel unsafe, she said. "We don't sit outside at night."
City crews are eyeing late summer or fall to install the first new streetlight. But first, IPL is converting 27,000 streetlights to LED technology. For every 10 lights transferred to the LED technology, the city will install one new light.
"It will take some time, but the commitment is there," Hogsett said. "I think the neighborhoods will see a profound difference in the lighting of the community, and I think that's important for Indianapolis."
