Ferebee released a statement Wednesday calling the consideration an "honor" but says that after discussion with his family, the IPS school board and the search committee in L.A., he has decided to withdraw his name.

“Recently, I was announced as one of the finalists for the Los Angeles Unified School District superintendent position. After further discussing this endeavor with my family, the Indianapolis Board of School Commissioners, and those handling the search process, I have withdrawn my name from consideration. It was an honor to have been considered for an opportunity of this magnitude.”

The Los Angeles Times reports that Ferebee was not the top finalist but was one of three being actively considered for the job.

Ferebee's contract with Indianapolis Public Schools runs through June 30, 2019. An extension was approved by the board in February 2016, but under the terms listed in his original contract he can resign or retire at any time.
