LeBron James and Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer will team up on a scripted drama series based on the life of Hoosier entrepreneur and social activist Madam C.J. Walker.
The project will be under the wing of James’ production company, SpringHill Entertainment, and based off the book “On Her Own Ground” written by A’Lelia Bundles, Walker’s great-great-granddaughter,” according to Variety.
“I am really proud of this project and that SpringHill will be partnering with Octavia to tell this important story,” James told Variety. “Every American should all know the story of Madam C.J. Walker. She was an innovator, entrepreneur, social activist, and total game changer whose story has been left out of the history books. I hope this project lives up to her legacy with a story that will educate and inspire.”
The SpringHill production will complement the company’s mission, which strives to tell the stories of hidden African-Americans who have shaped history.
Madam C.J. Walker, born Sarah Breedlove, was the first black woman millionaire in America after she launched a line of successful hair care products for black women.
The Madame Walker Theatre Center , found on Indiana Avenue in downtown Indy, once served as the headquarters and manufacturing plant for Walker’s hair and beauty products.
Warner Bros and Zero Gravity will also be part of the production process.
Variety reported the series may be picked up by Netflix, but the company did not comment on their involvement.
