FLAT ROCK, Ind. -- An inmate who escaped from a southern Indiana prison more than three decades ago is back behind bars after he was injured in a car crash.

Shelby County sheriff's deputies responded to the crash at SR 252 and CR 600 W just before 11 p.m. Tuesday evening.

The victim told police his name was Terry Burton, however, when he was being treated at the hospital they learned Terry Burton was already deceased.

When they questioned him a second time the man admitted that his real name was Gary Lee Burton and that he walked away from the Henryville Correctional Facility in the early 1980s. He told police he "did not want to lie anymore" about who he was.

Police discovered Gary Burton was a wanted fugitive and he was taken into custody without incident.

He's charged with OWI, false informing, out of county warrants and escape.
