INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis church has years pooling together thousands of dollars in resources to open a community center on the city's west side.
The Friendship Westside Center for Excellence is meant to be a safe haven for the community and will eventually serve a wide range of people from children all the way to grandparents.
The Friendship Missionary Baptist Church has been working to overhaul the building that will house the center for the past four years.
Pastor Ronald Covington says they believe now is the perfect time to open it.
“The shootings, the murders all the crime going on, our hope is that we can be the place to deal with the front end, to deal with the anger management in a different way,” said Pastor Covington.
The church has invested $400,000 in making this center a reality.
“This place had to be completely redone, windows, doors, the pool had to be filled in – it took a lot, definitely,” said Pastor Covington.
The church is still looking to partner with local businesses to build up its services.
It will slowly begin to roll out those services after August 18.
