INDIANAPOLIS — It will be at least late next month before a decision is made on whether to charge a 14-year-old as an adult in the December murder of a man outside a Dollar General store.

The teenager appeared alongside his attorney and parents at a Tuesday hearing in Marion County Juvenile Court.

Attorneys said more time was needed to complete a competency evaluation of the suspect — a process that includes examinations by two court-appointed doctors.

The teen's lawyer also told the court he needs time to read over more than 400 pages of case-related documents.

Another hearing was set for Feb. 26.

Gregory Raley, 37, was shot to death in the parking lot of the Dollar General store in Cumberland where he had been shopping.

Steven Sheppard, 18, faces murder charges in Raley's death, but investigators believe it was the 14-year-old who did the shooting.

Both suspects were involved in a robbery of the store, according to police.

Raley's family met with a victim's assistance advocate and the deputy prosecutor assigned to the case following Tuesday's hearing.

They were told it can take months before a decision is made on whether to charge a younger teenager as an adult in a murder case.MORE TOP STORIES| https://www.theindychannel.com/news/local-news/hamilton-county/noblesville/noblesville-police-respond-to-unsafe-sledding-call”> Noblesville police respond to unsafe sledding call | https://www.theindychannel.com/news/local-news/tippecanoe-county/watch-lafayette-police-release-body-cam-footage-from-incident-where-officer-shot-by-fellow-cop>Lafayette police release body cam footage from incident where officer shot by fellow officer | https://www.theindychannel.com/news/local-news/indianapolis/breaking-a-30-min-police-chase-has-backed-up-traffic-at-kessler-and-i-65>Man who led police on chase that ended on interstate took his own life | https://www.theindychannel.com/news/local-news/indianapolis/indiana-issuing-food-stamps-early-due-to-government-shutdown/> Indiana issuing February food stamps early | https://www.theindychannel.com/news/local-news/indianapolis/police-searching-for-man-who-threw-bag-with-injured-puppy-out-car-window> IMPD search for man who threw bag from car with injured puppy insideTop Trending Videoshttps://www.youtube.com/embed/videoseries?list=PL1XB30Q_dhR9ivBaTmp2mxoGHCtopnngS</a> width=”560”>
