INDIANAPOLIS -- Walkers, runners and bikers won't be able to use a portion of Indy's Canal Towpath on the near northwest side for the rest of 2018.
Citizens Energy says the towpath will be closed from just south of the path's bridge under Interstate 65 to 30th Street through Dec. 2018.
Citizens says the closure is for construction of a new water intake in the 3400 block White River Parkway Drive. The intake will allow 70 million gallons of water to be transferred each day from the White River to the Central Canal for use at Citizens’ White River Treatment Plant.
According to the city, "The Central Canal is a primary source of drinking water for the Indianapolis metropolitan area." The canal currently receives its water from the White River in the Broad Ripple area.
The map above shows the detour for the towpath. It will take you around the construction via Michigan Road and Dr. Martin Luther King Streets and then on other city streets, before returning to the path.
