INDIANAPOLIS -- One man was taken into custody early Monday morning after shooting at officers and barricading himself in an hours-long standoff on Indianapolis' southwest side, police say.

The incident began when officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department attempted to pull over a vehicle near the intersection of Howard and Shepard streets just after 7 p.m. Sunday when someone inside that vehicle fired shots at the two officers.

No officer was hit and they did not fire back at the suspect.

After driving off, the suspect barricaded himself inside of a house a few blocks away near Belmont Avenue and Lambert Street, police say.

After a few hours, police were able to make contact with the suspect, gain entry to the house peacefully and arrest him.

Police say this is the best possible ending for the scenario.

"This is the way we wanted it to end up," IMPD officer Genae Cook said. "We didn't want him to get hurt, we don't want any other officers getting hurt in the process."

It is unknown what kind of charges the suspect will face.
