INDIANAPOLIS -- The Soldiers and Sailors Monument is closed and artifacts from inside the Monument Circle location are being moved to protect them from persistent flooding issues.

J Stewart Goodwin, the Executive Director of Indiana War Memorials, said Thursday that they started moving the artifacts weeks ago because of standing water in the basement.

None of the artifacts have been damaged, according to Goodwin. The building is being assessed to see what repairs can be made to limit future flooding, but it has been a recurring problem at the historic site.

The monument was closed to the public for several days back in May during heavy rains, which caused similar flooding issues.

No estimate was given when the monument would reopen.
