INDIANAPOLIS – A new studypublished by the American Academy of Pediatrics found that hand sanitizer is safer for kids than washing their hands.

Riley Hospital for Children Dr. John Christenson says most people don’t spend much time at the sink when washing their hands so it’s not the best option.

"You can apply it readily without having to bring the children to the sink, you can put hand sanitizer on them and let them roam around the daycare,” Christenson said.

The CDC says go the hand washing route if your hands are visibly dirty or greasy.

When you do use hand sanitizer make sure your hands are dry after 20 seconds or else it may not work as well against germs.
