SPEEDWAY, Ind. -- Hoist a beer, pick up a book and engage in some good old conversation. That’s exactly what you can expect from Books and Brews, a new business getting set to open in the town of Speedway.
It’s a new chapter for the Indianapolis-based business that already has six other franchises around central Indiana and three more in the works, including Speedway. Speedway Books and Brews owners Scott Earlywine and Gary Heady are busy putting the finishing touches on the taproom which they hope to open to the public on Friday, May 4.
They’ve remodeled a former credit union in the Speedway Shopping Center into something that looks like a combination of a library, bookstore and bar. The sign on the building tells you exactly what they hope you do: read, drink, converse.
Dozens of donated books already fill the shelves and additional donations are welcome. You can peruse a book while enjoying a local craft beer, or you can buy the book to take home. Books and Brews is selling donated books for $3.00 each, with 10% of each sale going to Indy Reads, which promotes adult and family literacy in Central Indiana.
You won’t find a television in the house, a nod to helping promote a relaxing atmosphere conducive to communicating through the art of conversation. They also have a selection of games that can be played anytime or on special theme nights, such as board game night, trivia night or Harry Potter night, just to name a few.
You won’t go hungry at Books and Brews either. In addition to beer, wine and coffee, there are a variety of sandwiches, appetizers and other pub food on the menu, all with a literary theme. There is also a children’s menu.
Books and Brews also has a large outdoor space. What were once the drive-thru lanes at the credit union have been turned into a covered patio with several picnic tables and a 20-foot long fire pit. And if you’re a pet owner you’ll love this -- the patio is pet friendly. It’s the first pet friendly location for the Books and Brews franchise.
Books and Brews will be open 7 days a week. The business is located right behind Grindstone Charley’s and Firestone in the Speedway Shopping Center on Crawfordsville Road, about a mile west of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
