INDIANAPOLIS—  A group of concerned citizens are cleaning up their Mars Hill neighborhood, bridge by bridge.

Volunteers with the Southwest Association of Neighbors (SWAN) are painting over vulgar graffiti, including the bridge on Farnsworth between Lyons and Rybolt Street.

“For years it has had vulgar words spray painted on it,” said Tina Marie Graham, SWAN Vice President. “We decided to paint the bridge to cover the tagging.”

Volunteers with SWAN play to paint the north side of the bridge on Saturday, May 25, weather permitting.

“We are planning to have a neighborhood resident to paint a mural in the future,” said Graham. “It's part of our plan to revitalize our neighborhood one small project at a time.”

SWAN’s mission is to revitalize the Southwest Indy area neighborhoods and to serve as a catalyst to enrich the safety and quality of life for residents.

“Our goal is to serve residents in a physical, spiritual, and economic outreach in order to foster a sense of community,” according to their website. “SWAN has worked and will continue to work with city leaders to address the issues our neighborhoods face such as abandoned housing, street flooding, and crime.”
