SPEEDWAY, Ind. -- If you’re heading to the track anytime this week, make sure you’re up to speed on how to keep you and your possessions safe.

Car break-ins in the designated lots and on nearby streets are always an issue come race week, and police in Indianapolis and Speedway are asking visitors to be extra vigilant and use common sense to help reduce the number of crimes.

“When you have 300,000 plus people that visit the town of Speedway and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, it does bring out some of the element,” said Speedway Police Captain Trent Theobald. “Unfortunately, we will have some things that come up missing from vehicles.”

Speedway police say they patrol everywhere outside the track. IMS handles the security inside.

“A lot of the places around here are private parking, so make sure you don’t park in a bad place,” said Captain Theobald. “Look at signage on the streets... you might not want to park there if it says it’s restricted.”

For people living near the track, that includes taking extra precautions around your home as well.

Brett Voorhies says he stays extra vigilant during race weeks, locking his doors, cars and making sure all of his security lights and cameras are working.

“You just always have to be vigilant and keep your eyes open,” said Voorhies. “The good thing is all of our neighbors watch each other and we make sure that we keep an eye on each other’s houses.”

The best way to avoid being a victim is to leave valuable items home if you visit the track. But police say if you do bring valuable items, make sure they are stowed away, out of sight and that your car is locked
