INDIANAPOLIS — To kick off the 20th annual Indy BackPack Attack, local businesses picked up donation bins on Monday so they're set up to collect supplies. Big items usually donated include backpacks, pens, and headphones.

It's reported that 87 percent of families in the Indianapolis Public School system need help with necessary school supplies. Which is why organizers say this drive is critical in students' success.

"Just knowing that there are so many children that families can't afford school supplies, getting on board with that," Mandy Emery, with Indy BackPack Attack, said. "It's rewarding, especially if you get to see the smiles on their faces when they get the supplies, you know it keeps them in tune to their school better."

Donations can be dropped off at the IUPUI Surplus Warehouse at 1830 West 16th Street. Indy BackPack Attack needs all donations by July 24.
